Royal presentation for University’s Institute of Sound and Vibration Research
Professor Steve Elliot, the Director of the University’s Institute of Sound and Vibration Research (ISVR), and the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Bill Wakeham, were yesterday presented with the 2006 Queen's Anniversary Prize medal and certificate by Her Majesty The Queen and HRH The Duke of Edinburgh.
The award of the Queen’s Anniversary Prize for Further and Higher Education formally recognises ISVR’s sustained excellence and outstanding achievements as Europe’s leading centre for research, teaching, and consultancy in sound and vibration. It particularly acknowledges its achievements in improving the quality of life for the profoundly deaf and reducing noise pollution.
The ceremony in the Ballroom at Buckingham Palace was also attended by the Chancellor, Lord Selborne; Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Professor Phil Nelson, himself a former Director of ISVR; Professor Peter Davies, one of ISVR’s founding academics, and five ISVR students Jing Lv, Thomas Corbishley, Iansteel Achunche, Alison Vaughan and Dr Jaswinder Singh Sandhu.
The work of the Institute centres on the interface between technology and humans. It has played a major part in making aircraft quieter, developing more efficient cochlear implants for people with hearing loss, and improving sound systems. At the core of some of its projects are clinics, including the South of England Cochlear Implant Centre, and collaborations with hospitals in the region.
"This Award formally recognises ISVR’s sustained excellence and outstanding achievements in research in the field of sound and vibration over the past 40 years, and also its contribution to business and the wider community. It provides an opportunity for the University to highlight this achievement to the world at large and to celebrate the success with colleagues in ISVR," said the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Bill Wakeham.
ISVR Director, Professor Steve Elliott, said: "We are honoured to receive this prestigious Award. The Institute of Sound and Vibration Research is a centre of excellence in teaching, research and consulting and we are delighted that our work has been recognised in this way."

Professor Stephen Elliott BSc(Hons), PhD, FREng
Professor Steve Elliott is a Professor at the ISVR, in Engineering and Physical Sciences at the University of Southampton.
He graduated with joint honours in physics and electronics from the University of London in 1976 and in 1979 was awarded a Ph.D. from the University of Surrey for a thesis on musical acoustics. After his appointment as a lecturer at the Institute of Sound and Vibration Research (ISVR) in 1982, he was made senior lecturer in 1988 and Professor of Adaptive Systems in 1994.
He served as Director of the ISVR from 2005 to 2010
