Southampton leaps eight places in The Times university league table

Published: 16 August 2007

The University of Southampton has risen eight places to 14th in The Times Good University Guide 2008 which is published in The Times newspaper today (16 August 2007).

The Times Good University Guide ranks 113 UK universities according to eight criteria, including student satisfaction, research quality and degree results. In addition to the main league table, universities are also ranked by 32 subjects of study.

In the subject tables, Southampton appeared in the top 20 for most subjects, with Electrical and Electronic Engineering ranked 2nd behind Cambridge; Mechanical Engineering ranked joint 4th with Imperial College and top five places for both Chemistry and Computer Science.

Vice-Chancellor, Professor Bill Wakeham, comments: "This impressive rise up The Times' league table puts Southampton firmly in the top twenty of UK universities following its 13th place in The Guardian University Guide 2008 earlier this year.

"I am particularly pleased to note that we are ranked 6th overall for student satisfaction. The league tables demonstrate that the University continues to improve but we are also aware that there are challenges to address if we are to achieve our aim of a top ten ranking in the future."
