University of Southampton announces new international branch campus

The University of Southampton has signed an agreement to establish a new branch campus in Malaysia.

Scheduled to open in 2012, the University of Southampton Malaysia Campus will initially offer undergraduate courses in engineering.

The campus will be located within the EduCity development in the Iskandar region of Malaysia. Courses will be taught in Malaysia for the first two years of the programme with a seamless transition to Southampton's UK campus for the last two years.

The agreement was signed by the University's Vice-Chancellor Professor Don Nutbeam and developers Iskandar Investment Berhad, witnessed by YB Dato' Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin, Minister of Higher Education in Malaysia, and Mr Simon Featherstone, British High Commissioner to Malaysia.

Professor Nutbeam says: "The University is excited to be associated with the innovative EduCity development that brings together a host of world-leading educational institutions in a unique research and learning environment. As an international university with globally renowned expertise in engineering and research, our expertise will offer students a world-class education, helping to meet Malaysia's demand for exceptional engineering graduates."

The state-of-the-art campus will be established in EduCity, which will comprise of international universities, schools and colleges, leisure and sports facilities. It is expected that there will be an initial intake of 60 students to the Southampton campus.

Datuk Syed Mohamed Syed Ibrahim, President/CEO Designate of Iskander Investment, says: "The University of Southampton Malaysia Campus in EduCity@Iskandar will boost the region's education offering, and raise overall education standards in Malaysia. It will also address a shortage of engineers in Malaysia and nurture the next generation of industry leaders."
