Discover the stars at the University of Southampton

Published: 11 January 2012

To coincide with BBC Two's Stargazing LIVE event, the University of Southampton is hosting two special astronomical events for all the family next week.

On Monday 16 January from 6 to 9pm, members of the public are invited to see the stars from the comfort of the Soton Astrodome - the University’s inflatable mobile planetarium, which will be running Planetarium shows during the evening.

Visitors can also try out the telescopes and the observatory on the roof of the Physics and Astronomy building, while an astrophotography workshop, a world-wide telescope tutorial and live streaming of the BBC Stargazing LIVE event will help guests explore the astrophysics of the Universe.

The second event is taking place on Saturday 21 January from 10.30am to 4pm at Southampton City Art Gallery. This free family event includes planetarium shows in the Soton Astrodome and lots of astronomy themed hands-on activities for budding young scientists of all ages.

Dr Sadie Jones, an Astronomer at the University of Southampton, says:
“These two free events provide a great opportunity to investigate our night skies further and encourage more children, families and individuals to get out, about and starry eyed.”

If you are planning to attend the free event on Monday 16 January at the University, please email sadie.jones@soton.ac.uk or call 07766 247 561 to indicate how many will be in your party, and if you plan to see one of the planetarium shows in the astrodome.
