Scientists bring their research to pubs across Southampton

Science and beer will join forces for a series of wacky and insightful sessions across Southampton when Pint of Science arrives later this month.
Want to hear some myths busted about your daily coffee, or understand what happens if two ChatGPTs talk to each other?
Or do you want to know how to maintain a healthy gut, or how AI can defeat Mario Kart?
These, and other weird and wonderful science topics, make up a wide programme of Pint of Science events in Southampton, organised by the University of Southampton and taking place at pubs and bars across the city from 19 to 21 May.
Dr Miguel Ramirez Moreno, postdoctoral researcher in neuroscience, will be exploring what fruit flies can tell us about neurodegenerative diseases at Revolution in Bedford Place on Monday 19 May.
He said: “Although humans and flies may seem quite different, we are all made of the same building blocks. Pint of Science is an excellent opportunity to showcase to the audience just how much we can learn about our brains thanks to a humble fly.”

Professor of Computer Science and standup comedian Leslie Carr will examine responsible AI at Brewhouse & Kitchen in Highfield Lane on Tuesday 20 May.
He said: “Pint of Science is a great opportunity to get the inside story about science from the people who do it. In my talk I’ll explain my mixed emotions about living in the science fiction world of my youth – with AIs that can talk to us as well as tech bro ‘evil geniuses’ threatening to take away everyone’s jobs and destroy the world. I’ll also explain what university researchers are doing to make AI into a force for good.”

Biomedical science student Hannah Kilpatrick will be spilling the beans on caffeine at Revolution on Wednesday 21 May.
She said: “Did you know that 80 per cent of the world’s population consumes caffeine daily? It’s hidden in more products than you may think. Join me at Pint of Science to find out more.”
Pint of Science is an annual international event that brings academics and experts to venues around the world to share unusual, inspiring and surprising elements of their work – over a pint. This year it’s taking part in 40 cities across the UK and in 25 countries.
