Event details
The Engagement & Advancement Events team was delighted that alumnus and University of Southampton Pro-Chancellor, Jon Sopel, hosted a lecture and book signing at 18:00 on Wednesday 13 December on Highfield Campus.
The event sold out and was live streamed from this page.
Jon read a short extract from his book, ‘If Only They Didn’t Speak English: Notes from Trump’s America’. He then discussed his views on politics in America today as well as taking questions from the audience.
There are very few British journalists working today who understand the American political and cultural landscape as well as Jon. As the BBC’s North America Editor, he has gained rare access and insight into those shaping the world’s most powerful nation. He’s travelled on Air Force One, interviewed President Obama at the White House and has covered the last three presidential campaigns. He also went head-to-head with President Donald J Trump in a well-publicised press conference, during which Jon challenged the President on his Executive Order for an immigration ban.
The 2016 election shone a light on the divisions between black and white, young and old, rich and poor, urban and rural, educated and uneducated. In a new political era, Jon’s book can be seen as an essential guide to the ‘New America’.
After the lecture, Jon held a book signing.
