The University Of Southampton was delighted to host Rt Hon. Helen Clark ONZ and Jane Falkingham as speakers in our Distinguished Lecture series.

Rt Hon. Helen Clark ONZ, former Prime Minister of New Zealand joined Professor Jane Falkingham , Dean of Social Sciences for an ‘In Conversation’ lecture discussing ‘Women in Leadership’ on Thursday 25 July.

Speaker details

Helen Clark was Prime Minister of New Zealand for three successive terms from 1999 to 2008. She was the first woman to become Prime Minister following a general election in New Zealand and the second woman to serve as Prime Minister. Throughout her tenure, she engaged widely in policy development and advocacy across the international affairs, economic, social, environmental and cultural spheres.

In 2009 Helen became Administrator for the United Nations Development Programme. She was the first woman to lead the organisation, and served two terms there. As Administrator, she led the UNDP to be ranked the most transparent global development organisation.

Helen’s campaign to become the UN Secretary General, was covered by Gaylene Preston in the documentary ‘My Year with Helen’.
