UCU industrial action at University of Southampton 2022-2023

Published: 7 March 2023

Members of the University and College Union (UCU) at 150 universities, including the University of Southampton, have voted to support industrial action over the national issues of pay, working conditions and reforms to the Universities Superannuation Scheme (USS).

Further to industrial action at our University in November 2022 from members of UCU over these issues, UCU has now given our University notice that it will take the following 18 days strike action between February and March:

  • Week 1 – Wednesday 1 February
  • Week 2 – Thursday 9 and Friday 10 February
  • Week 3 – Tuesday 14, Wednesday 15 and Thursday 16 February
  • Week 4 – Tuesday 21, Wednesday 22 and Thursday 23 February (action paused)
  • Week 5 – Monday 27 and Tuesday 28 February and Wednesday 1 and Thursday 2 March (action paused)
  • [No action week commencing Monday 6 March]
  • Week 6 – Wednesday 15, Thursday 16 and Friday 17 March
  • Week 7 – Monday 20, Tuesday 21 and Wednesday 22 March

The notice of industrial action continues to call on members to take action short of a strike (ASOS) until no later than 20 April 2023 (or at a time when the dispute is considered to be resolved), but does not include a marking and assessment boycott.

A dedicated information hub with Frequently Asked Questions is now available so that all our staff and students can keep up to date with the latest developments.

If you are a visitor and planning to attend an activity at the University of Southampton during the period of proposed strike action, please check with the organisers of your event to ensure that it is proceeding as planned.

All of our colleagues care deeply about the education of our students and the wider activities of our University, and we will work to minimise the impact of any action on our community.
