A well attended visiting lecture by Exeter University's David Butler on 29 November was preceded by a popular networking lunch which gave those attending plenty of opportunity to talk to the speaker.

Professor David Butler is  Professor of Water Engineering at the University of Exeter and his talk: 'The water-energy-climate cycle: from vicious to virtuous?' was introduced by Chair of the Nexus-Science USRG, Professor Paul Kemp.

The talk focused on the water and energy parts of the nexus - with climate change as an integrated consequence. It gave an eye-opening insight into the facts and figures behind not just water use in the UK and globally, but the interdependency between that use and the amount of energy which is used in providing it - which in turn has an impact on climate change through emissions created by that energy use contributing to CO2 in the atmosphere.

His slides illustrated a number of household scenarios and demonstrated how much impact certain changes could have on water use and - in consequence - energy consumption; thus helping to mitigate climate change. The innovative vacuum-flush toilet was a popular feature, as was the zero-energy rainwater harvesting device that Professor Butler and his research team are working on.

If you were unable to attend, the slides are available to browse below.
