Jenny Walker

Project

I'm studying a combination of machine learning and marine biology, looking to use state of the art machine learning techniques to improve our knowledge of the deep sea. My current research is focusing on the use of deep convolutional neural networks such as DeepLab and Mask R-CNN. I aim to automate the analysis of images we take of the seafloor, being able to summarise important information such as biodiversity, biomass, and the biological carbon in a given area.

This information will allow for marine biologists to make more well informed observations of differences both temporally and spatially, allowing them to form important hypotheses and theories as to how the deep sea is changing and why.
