Research Fellow

Dr Manon Duret is a Research Fellow within Ocean and Earth Science, National Oceanography Centre Southampton at the University of Southampton.

I currently work on a project aiming to increase atmospheric carbon dioxide capture with in situ silicate minerals weathering coupled with carbonate minerals formation. My role within this project is to investigate how natural microbial communities can be engineered to enhance the kinetics of such processes.

My PhD research focused on the microbial communities associated with sinking and suspended marine particles and their influence on the oceanic biological carbon pump. I finished my doctoral thesis in 2018 at the University of Southampton (NOCS).

I completed an MSc in Oceanography in 2014 at l’Université du Littoral Côte d’Opale (France) during which I carried out a research project at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (USA) on eukaryotic microbes in oxygen minimum zones.

Research interests

My research interests include microbial ecology, marine biogeochemistry and geomicrobiology.

I use molecular biology tools (such as amplicon sequencing and metatranscriptomics) coupled with microbial culturing to study the structure and composition of complex microbial communities, as well as their interaction and influence on the environment.
