Dr Tim van Peer is a Research Fellow in Palaeoceanography and Palaeoclimate within Ocean and Earth Science, National Oceanography Centre Southampton at the University of Southampton.

2018 – present: Research Fellow, University of Southampton

Jan – March 2018: Paleomagnetist onboard R/V JOIDES Resolution during IODP Expedition 374 (Ross Sea West Antarctic Ice Sheet History)

2013 – 2017: PhD, University of Southampton (A palaeomagnetic, astrochronological, and environmental magnetic perspective on Oligocene-Miocene climate, using drift sediments from the northwest Atlantic Ocean)

Jan – Jul 2016: Curatorial assistant BOSCORF (British Ocean Sediment Core Research Facility)

2008 – 2013: BSc and MSc, Utrecht University (Astronomically tuned magnetocyclostratigraphy of late Burdigalian marine sediments at Monte Cardeto, Ancona, Italy)

Research interests

- Oligocene through Neogene climate reconstructions, e.g., ocean circulation and evolution of the Antarctic ice sheet in various climate states.

- Magnetic stratigraphies such as magnetostratigraphy and relative palaeointensity (RPI) to determine time and duration of palaeoclimatic and geomagnetic events.

- Rock and environmental magnetic characteristics and X-ray fluorescence data to reconstruct palaeoenvironmental and palaeoceanographic variability.
