Award for Southampton graduate Mike Clare
Geology alumnus Mike Clare has won an award for young geologists based in the Thames Valley.

Mike, who graduated with a MGeol degree in 2004, was one of four finalists to make a presentation to the regional group of the Geological Society. He spoke about deep water geohazard assessments for turbidity currents, conditions that exist in the western Mediterranean and off the coast of west Africa.
He won the Richard Fox Shield, named after the founder of the Thames Valley regional group. “The competition for geologists under 35 years old tests communication skills, enthusiasm, knowledge and understanding,” he says. “I spoke about my work using some of the presentation skills I learned at university.”
Mike joined Fugro GeoConsulting in Oxfordshire in 2005. He now leads a team of geologists. The international engineering consultancy identifies and quantifies risks on and below the seabed to plan the best location, design and installation of wells, pipelines and other facilities.
