September Open days - a great opportunity to share ambition!

Published: 9 September 2013

Our university September Open Days were another chance for Ocean and Earth Science to welcome prospective undergraduate students to have a look around our wonderful facilities at the National Oceanography Centre Southampton (NOCS).

Over the course of the two Open Days that were expertly organised by our Recruitment and Admissions team, there were great opportunities for prospective and current students to share information about thier ambitions in the world of Ocean and Earth Science.

All of our undergraduate courses are represented at our Open Days, with presentations and practical activities. Students were able to look around the laboratories, speak to lecturers, find out about the modules, field-work and possible career pathways. They were also able to find out more about student finance and the application process, visit the student accommodation and join one of our guided campus tours both at NOCS waterfront campus and the Highfield campus.

The open day tours at NOCS are expertly led by our student ambassadors and provided the students with the opportunity to see all the teaching facilities, the extensive NOC library, the social areas and just how uniquely positioned our waterfront campus is. The student ambassadors provided valuable first-hand advice on programme options, the benefits of studying at NOCS and the experience they have gained since being at Southampton. As well as their own plans for the future.

Ocean and Earth UG Open Day at NOC

Dr Cathy Lucas, Lecturer in Marine Biology, commented  "The overall attendance at the Open Days was excellent, with the lecture theatre full to capacity of enthusiastic prospective students and their parents. Dr Antony Jensen and Dr Simon Boxall were a great double act in the marine biology and oceanography talk, while Dr Rex Taylor spoke in depth to a large number of budding geologists and geophysicists. The large number of visitors also had the unique opportunity of seeing NERC's brand new research ship Discovery alongside while they had their lunches in the waterfront cafeteria."

Don't worry if you missed the Open Days this time. All of our admission tutors are contactable. Or if you attended an Open Day and you have further questions, please feel free to get in touch with the relevant admission tutor for further guidance. You can find their contact details on our Ocean and Earth Science website.
