Dr Catherine Rychert from Ocean and Earth Science at the University of Southampton has been announced as the 2015 winner of the Fowler Award of the Royal Astronomical Society.

Dr Rychert received her award for her significant achievement in the field of geophysics. Her work focuses on imaging the Earth’s tectonic plate and developing a range of geophysical methods to help understand the mechanisms behind it. Dr Rychert’s significant contributions in this field make her one of the world’s leading young seismologists.

Dr Rychert said: “I am honoured to receive the Fowler Award from the Royal Astronomical Society. The award represents an important promotion of early career science and I am humbled and grateful that my research has been highlighted in this way. I am also thankful for the amazing support provided by my family, my students and postdocs and the University of Southampton.”

Professor Martin Barstow, President of the Royal Astronomical Society, offered his congratulations: “Catherine Rychert is someone who has made an outstanding contribution to geophysics early in her career. As President of the RAS, it gives me enormous pleasure to congratulate her and to wish her continued success in all that she does.”
