Event details

Professor Peter Kelemen of Columbia University and Lamont Doherty Earth Observatory is visiting Ocean & Earth Science at the National Oceanography Centre Southampton next week. Professor Kelemen is a University of Southampton Diamond Jubilee Fellow (2013-2016) and Visiting Professor. He was recently elected to the US National Academy of Sciences and is a Fellow of the American Geophysical Union and the Geochemical Society amongst numerous other awards.

Professor Kelemen will be presenting a special lecture at 4:00pm on Thursday 29th May in the Charnock Lecture Theatre (104/20) at NOCS. A reception will follow his Lecture.

Peter is expert on the formation of new Earth's crust at both mid-ocean ridges and in arcs. Most recently he has turned his knowledge to the capture of CO2 by mineral carbonation reactions between the atmosphere, groundwaters and rocks from the upper mantle – aspects of this major societal challenge will be the subject of his talk:
"Mineral carbonation: emulating natural systems to achieve geologic carbon capture and storage"

More information regarding Professor Peter Kelemen’ s research can be found here; http://www.ldeo.columbia.edu/user/peterk

Peter is a compelling, inspirational and thought-provoking speaker – please come along to his talk and the reception.
