Event details

The Three Minute Thesis (3MT™) is a science communication competition which challenges postgraduate researchers to explain their research project to a non-specialist audience in just three minutes.

Developed by The University of Queensland (UQ) in 2008, enthusiasm for the 3MT concept has led to its adoption internationally including at several UK institutions, and we are very excited to be running our first competition at the University of Southampton during 2013/14.

Using just one PowerPoint slide and no additional props or electronic media, our brave PhD students have just three minutes to present their doctoral research:

Name Academic Unit Title
Katy Stubbs Biological Sciences Appearances can be deceiving: Contrasting axonal degeneration in injury and disease
Marco Facciotti Chemistry How can chemistry help National Grid to keep our lights on?
Tom Hall Ocean and Earth Science Earthquakes: a slippery business
Emily Farthing Biological Sciences Managing micronutrients: a way to improve food security?
Duncan Parker Chemistry Complex reaction networks
Anieke Brombacher Ocean and Earth Science To die or not to die: what makes a species go extinct?
