Industry Talk

Dr Andy Davies and Prof Mike Simmons are experienced geological advisers with Halliburton, a major oil industry service company. Their main focus is helping de-risk exploration in frontier regions by the application of regional geology, geodynamics, sequence stratigraphy and, increasingly, data science.

Despite shifts to more carbon-neutral energy sources in the future, there is broad consensus that demand for hydrocarbons will not substantially decrease in the next twenty or so years and that oil and gas will continue to be part of the energy mix out to 2050 and beyond. Readily available energy, especially for electricity generation, fuels healthier and wealthier economies. So geologists need to continue to find new oil and gas fields. This is becoming more difficult as explorers turn to basins and plays with greater geological uncertainties. As a result of the loss of experience in the industry, early career geoscientists will be increasingly required to explore in frontier basins and utilize a wider range of specialist techniques. However, combining cutting edge geoscience and the benefits of the digital revolution with innovative software tools has the power to ensure successful exploration will continue, helping the world population to continue to benefit from an unprecedented move away from poverty.
