Ms Anita Hollingsworth is a postgraduate research student within Ocean and Earth Science, National Oceanography Centre Southampton at the University of Southampton.

My research has focused primarily on marine microbiology, ranging from coastal, pelagic to the deep sea. I completed my BSc Marine Biology and Coastal Ecology degree at Plymouth University. During this time I worked at the Marine Biological Association researching planktonic fungi. This formed the basis for my honours project, which examined the ecological role of filamentous fungi degrading phytoplankton-derived organic matter in the water column. Following on from my BSc, I undertook my MRes in Marine Biology, again at Plymouth. My MRes research project, in collaboration with the MBA, was looking at the microbiome of the marine lichen Lichina pygmaea.

Research interests

I am interested in the diversity and spatial variability of marine microbial communities and their impact upon biogeochemical cycles.

Research project: Benthic Microbial Diversity in the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans.
