Miss Emily Hollingsworth is a postgraduate research student within the School of Ocean and Earth Science, National Oceanography Centre Southampton at the University of Southampton.

Academic Summary

2020-present: PhD in Geochemistry
2018-2020: MSc, Earth Science, Utrecht University
2014-2017: First Class BSc (Hons), Geography, University of Birmingham

During my undergraduate studies in Physical Geography, I was able to gain laboratory experience with a focus on palynology. I developed skills in microscopy and pollen identification, and was awarded ‘Best overseas dissertation’ for a project titled: ‘Palaeoenvironmental change in north-western Turkey: A palynological record of vegetation and climate during the Late Quaternary’.

Following graduation in the summer of 2017, I was invited to work as a bursary student on the NERC-funded project titled ‘Reducing Greenhouse Climate Proxy Uncertainty’ with Dr. James Bendle at the University of Birmingham. This opportunity introduced me to biomarkers and how novel organic geochemical techniques can be used to elucidate our past and future climate.

I then completed a 2-year Earth Science MSc at Utrecht University where I studied the paleoclimate/oceanography of the SW Pacific during the middle Eocene. As well as palynology (dinoflagellate cyst assemblages) and biomarkers, I also undertook inorganic geochemical analysis at the IODP Bremen Core Repository.

Research interests

- Reconstructing palaeoclimates/environments and complex biogeochemical interactions

- Investigating terrestrial carbon cycle response/feedback mechanisms during past warm climates (e.g. Eocene) and hyperthermal events (e.g. PETM)

- Utilising a multi-proxy approach of organic geochemistry (lipid biomarkers) and palynology in geological and modern sediment samples

Research project: Up in smoke! Terrestrial carbon cycle feedbacks during warm climates
