Mr Iain Stobbs is a postgraduate research student within Ocean and Earth Science, National Oceanography Centre Southampton at the University of Southampton.

Iain graduated from the Royal School of Mines, Imperial College London in 2013, completing his MSci project at the London Centre for Ore Deposits and Exploration (LODE), based at the Natural History Museum (NHM) London. Iain returned to academia in 2015 after working as a geotechnical and geoenvironmental engineer for a site investigation consultancy.

Iain is a NERC funded PhD student through the SPITFIRE DTP and CASE through part supervision at the British Geological Survey, Keyworth. Iain’s project is also associated with the EC FP7 funded Blue Mining Project.

Iain’s current research is investigating the origins and preservation implications of iron-silica exhalite lithologies within extinct seafloor massive sulphide deposits (eSMS) at the mid-Atlantic Ridge.

Research interests

Iain’s research interests are focussed on the geochemistry of ore deposits, a recurring theme from his MSci thesis through to his PhD research.

MSci Project title: “The Charlestown Inlier, Co. Mayo: mineralisation, geochemistry and regional correlation with allochthonous Caledonian island arcs across Ireland.”

Research project: Blue Mining: What drives hydrothermal systems and how does it vary over time?
