Mr Jon Lawrence is Postgraduate research student within Ocean and Earth Science, National Oceanography Centre Southampton at the University of Southampton.

2009-2013: MSci Earth Sciences, Oxford University

I am a first year PhD student in the Physical Oceanography group at the National Oceanography Centre Southampton. I am interested in large-scale phytoplankton dynamics in the Arctic, using a combined approach of satellite algorithms and a coupled biogeochemical-physical-sea ice model to investigate the distribution of primary productivity in the Arctic, its variability and the physical and biological mechanisms underlying this. Previously, I worked on bio-optics, writing a radiative transfer model to calculate in-water spectral irradiance and using this to investigate the seasonal cycling of coloured dissolved organic matter at the Bermuda Atlantic Time Series.

Research interests

  • Arctic phytoplankton dynamics

Research project: Arctic Ocean Productivity and its ice-free future
