Mark is a 2nd year PhD student in the marine biogeochemistry research group in the School of Ocean and Earth Science. His PhD project aims to assess marine primary production variability using biogeochemical-Argo float data and spatio-temporal statistical modelling. Mark is also a member of the Statistics research group in the School of Mathematics.
Mark is currently working on the chapter of his PhD project titled “Global space-time variability in primary production and carb on flux using the Argo float network”. His first chapter aims to investigate drivers of subsurface chlorophyll maxima on a global scale through statistical modelling. In particular, he is trying to establish the effect localised “ocean weather” has on the depth and intensity of subsurface chlorophyll maxima.
Mark has demonstrated several modules during his time in Southampton. He led problem classes for MATH6174 Likelihood and Bayesian Inference 2022-23 and helped with computer labs for MATH1024 Introduction to Probability and Statistics 2021-22, SOES1015 Introduction to Data Literacy and Statistics 2022-23 and SOES3056 Seascape Ecology 2022-23.
Mark completed his integrated master’s degree in mathematics at the University of Exeter in 2021. He specialised in applied mathematics and statistics, particularly in climate science and statistical modelling. His dissertation described a novel hierarchical extreme value model for rainfall data from high resolution climate projections. Mark joined the University of Southampton in September 2021.
