The X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) facility is a teaching and research resource for undergraduate and postgraduate students and staff within Ocean and Earth Science, providing a service for the qualitative or quantitative analysis of powdered geological rock samples to determine bulk mineral content and/or clay mineralogy. Samples are run on a Philips X'Pert pro XRD machine with a Cu X-ray tube. Mineral analysis and identification are undertaken using the JC PDS (powder diffraction studies) database and Siroquant© XRD analytic software. A service for XRD mineral analysis is also provided for external academic and industrial organisations. For further information concerning the XRD analysis of geological samples, please contact the Lab Manager Dr Richard Pearce , tel: +44 (0)23 8059 6477/6518.
