Research interests

As a marine biologist I have a broad and interdisciplinary research interest ranging from marine biology, marine biogeochemistry, ecotoxicology and water chemistry to paleoclimate reconstructions, organic geochemistry and stable isotope geochemistry.

My scientific work during the last years focused primarily on isotope geochemistry and ecology with an extensive practical approach using isotope ratio mass spectrometers coupled to a range of sample preparation devices.

I have expert knowledge in the fields of mass spectrometry instrumentation, lab management and instrument maintenance as well as research and teaching, especially in the area of gas chromatography, mass spectrometry and isotope ratio mass spectrometry together with the relevant sample and data processing procedures.

My work profile comprises tasks from independent field sampling on and offshore, sample analysis with complex instrumentation and data evaluation to the responsibility of the daily operation of a scientific laboratory with staff supervision.

Palaeoceanography and Palaeoclimate

I oversee and manage the day-to-day operations of the SEAPORT Stable Isotope Laboratory, an interdisciplinary laboratory service facility of the University of Southampton within Ocean and Earth Science (FELS) located at the National Oceanography Centre Southampton.

The primary focus of the SEAPORT Stable Isotope Lab is the measurement of light stable isotope ratios in a range of organic and inorganic materials, such as δ²H, δ¹³C, δ¹⁵N, δ¹⁸O and δ³⁴S with dedicated gas source isotope ratio mass spectrometers operated in dual inlet and continuous flow modes. The areas of research comprise geology, biology, chemistry, ecology, medicine and archaeology.

My role involves the provision and coordination of specialist analytical services to the research group, the School of Ocean and Earth Science, the wider University and the laboratory’s external customers.

I am responsible for the training and supervision of a lab technician and lab assistants in stable isotope techniques, the proper use and maintenance of equipment and the relevant health & safety procedures. I furthermore provide laboratory supervision and training of postdocs as well as PhD, MSc, MRes and BSc project students.

In addition to method development, data analysis, maintenance and running of the instruments, I am continuously working on expanding the lab’s analytical capabilities.
