Specialism: Organic Geochemistry and Palaeoclimatology

I use the geological record to understand large-scale Earth System processes in a warmer world. My research is primarily focused upon using molecular fossils (lipid biomarkers) to reconstruct environmental change during high CO2 climate intervals (e.g. the early Cenozoic). I am particularly interested in the impact of higher CO2 upon the wider Earth system, especially precipitation patterns, vegetation distributions and biogeochemical cycles.

I am also interested in expanding the lipid biomarker toolkit and developing new geochemical proxies to reconstruct different biogeochemical processes (e.g. methane cycling, mobilisation of soil organic matter and kerogen weathering).

DETECT is a Royal Society-funded Dorothy Hodgkin Fellowship project which will investigate the response of the terrestrial biosphere during past warm climates.
