Why did you choose to come and study at Southampton?
I chose Southampton because of the outstanding facilities for Ocean and Earth sciences, and the university’s reputation for excellence in teaching and research.
What is it like studying here?
I really appreciated the approachability of lecturers and postgrads, especially during the fourth year independent research project. In the earlier years of the course the help of PhD students in labs and problem classes was invaluable.
How do you rate study facilities at the University?
The National Oceanography Centre is the one of the foremost earth sciences research centres in Europe with extensive labs, high powered computer facilities and several research vessels. I could not imagine better facilities for earth sciences students.
What have been your Southampton highlights?
The highlight of my course was the opportunity to study in the Netherlands during my third year under the ERASMUS scheme. I also greatly enjoyed the second year field trip to Brittany and the opportunity to represent the university competing in BUCS (judo).
What did you enjoy most about your course?
For me, the most enjoyable aspect of the course has been using the skills learned in the maths and computing modules of earlier years in my fourth year independent research project.
Do you have the opportunity to study modules outside of your core subject area?
I was able to study oceanography and atmosphere modules during my degree. As well as being greatly enjoyable, these modules were invaluable in securing me an Ocean Sciences PhD position.
