Geology fieldwork

Fieldwork is an essential part of any geologist's training and is perhaps the most rewarding and enjoyable part of the degree, and at Southampton you can accumulate more geological fieldwork experience than at many other UK universities.

All of our field classes involve a variety of independent and teamwork exercises, which are designed to help you develop field, equipment-based and investigative skills. We are fortunate that Southampton has easy access to many areas of classic British geology such as the World Heritage Site of the Dorset coast, and the dinosaur-rich Isle of Wight and south west England.

Many individual modules have associated one day field courses to areas of local geological interest. You will also have the opportunity to take part in a number of residential field courses dependent on which modules you choose to study.

If you are registered for the three year Geology Single Honours or four year Geology undergraduate Master's degrees you will undertake an Independent Mapping Project in the summer vacation at the end of your second year. This involves an advanced one week training class in Anglesey, which is followed by a five week field mapping project, where you will construct a large-scale geological map of a selected area, and later write a geological report based on your findings. In recent years, mapping destinations have included Bulgaria, Cyprus, England (Cumbria), Eire (County Mayo), Scotland (Kerrera, Oban, Skye) and Spain (mainland and islands). Students on the Geology with Physical Geogragraphy three year degree programme may choose to do either a mapping project or an Independent Research Project, depending on their personal academic preferences.
