Geophysics fieldwork

Geophysicists need to be experienced in a wide range of data gathering and analytical techniques in the field, both on land and at sea.

During your degree you will gain experience in both geological and geophysical field studies. You may also take part in residential field courses during your first year to gain experience with geophysical surveys. Further training in the use of geophysical instrumentation will be gained during the summer of your second year, and you will be supported in devising and carrying out your own surveys.

All first year students attend a one-week field course during the Easter vacation, normally to South Wales and a two-day course in the summer term, normally to Brittany, together with first year geology students.

A further two-day field course will be held in the summer term, giving an introduction to exploration techniques or marine surveying and meteorology. Previously this has been held around Romsey, the Solent or Swanage area, or Bristol.

At the end of your first year you will be required to attend a seven-day residential field course, in the first weeks of the summer vacation (usually in the UK).

At the end of your second year a geophysical sciences field course of approximately seven to 10 days is held normally during the first two weeks of the summer vacation. In previous years this course has taken place either on the northern edge of the Dartmoor National Park, near Bovey Tracey, on the Lizard Peninsular or in Brittany. During the course you will receive training in the use of a wide range of geophysical instrumentation and engage in preliminary analysis and interpretation of geophysical data.

As well as receiving a first class education and gaining life-long memories and friends, Southampton has provided me with some great fieldwork experience and a broad range of academic and social skills to equip me for what lies ahead.
