Oceanography fieldwork

All branches of marine science rely on samples or measurements taken from the sea or estuaries, so fieldwork forms an important part of your degree.

Throughout your programme, you will gain experience of a wide range of modern surveying and sampling techniques. In the Easter vacation of your first year you will attend a Southampton-based field course where you will have the opportunity to gain a sea survival certificate. At the end of your second year you will attend a 10-day residential field course, currently held in Falmouth.

The residential field courses, working on the University's research vessels, boost your boatwork and laboratory skills. These field work activities are also invaluable to you for teamwork training and experience, and are designed to prepare you for the sort of working environment you might encounter in your future employment.

Please note that the locations of field trips may be subject to change. Contact the Admissions office for further information.

The film below is from our Falmouth field trip which is a ten day residential field trip that our second year marine biology and oceanography students enjoy every year.

The video below highlights all the incredible fieldwork opportunities students at Ocean and Earth Science enjoy.

Although humans first acquired knowledge of the waves and tides of the oceans in pre-historic times, modern oceanographic knowledge remains limited. The field of ocean engineering provides an important link between the oceanographic disciplines, coupled with a basic understanding of how the oceans work.
