Leading mineral exploration company supports geological mapping courses at Southampton.

One of the world’s largest mining and natural resources companies and a major graduate employer, Anglo American, is providing £100,000 of funding to support Southampton’s undergraduate geological mapping courses.

The funding, to be provided annually for the next 5 years, will directly support geological mapping fieldtrips for undergraduate students embarking upon geology degrees at Southampton.

Stuart McCracken, Head of Exploration Governance at Anglo American, says: “ We wish to support the field-based geological mapping courses of selected UK universities such as Southampton, as we believe that the skills students learn through these courses are critical to the future of our industry.”

Second year fieldtrip to Spain

Students undertaking geological mapping modules at Southampton gain important training in key techniques such as field data collation, interpretative map production, cross section construction, and the compilation of detailed reports to describe the geology of mapped areas.

Dr Steve Roberts comments: “The development of field geology skills is a crucial component of any geology degree, as well as being one of the most rewarding for students. Because of the wide range of practical experience our students obtain, they are very much in demand with a range of multi-national geological companies, such as Anglo American, when they graduate. This funding shows the recognition of the quality of the fieldwork skills developed by Southampton's geology students by a world-leading organisation, and their commitment to ensuring that future cohorts of Southampton geologists are well prepared to enter exploration careers in the industry.”
