Southampton geosciences degrees receive re-accreditation from The Geological Society of London

We are pleased to announce that all of our Geology degree programmes and BSc Geophysics programmes have just been fully re-accredited by the Geological Society of London for entry to Southampton in 2012/13. We are currently making a minor change to the MSci Geophysics programme, after which that programme will also be fully re-accredited for 2012/13 entry.

The Geological Society of London, the professional body tasked with accrediting first degree courses in geosciences, launched their Accreditation Scheme in 1997, and it has become an established benchmark of degree quality in this subject area.

Accredited status provides added assurance to prospective students that a department's teaching is of the highest quality, and has been approved by an independent body of academics and industrialists. Our accredited programmes have been certified as offering you training of a calibre that is suitable for a professional career in geosciences, as well as satisfying the requirements for accelerated Fellowship and Chartered Geologist status.

Having qualified with an accredited degree, our graduates are in great demand with employers, and highly successful in finding positions as professional geologists or in other degree-related careers.

Dr Lisa McNeill, Chair of the Geology Curriculum Board in Ocean and Earth Science at Southampton says: "The recognition of the quality of our degree programmes by the Geological Society of London through the reaccreditation process is a great reward for all the hard work put into teaching by our staff, and will assure prospective students that an education at Southampton will prepare them well for a successful career in geosciences."

Kimberley Dunn, first year Geology student adds: "Part of the reason I chose to study BSc Geology at the School of Ocean and Earth Science, Southampton, was down to the high practical content, in lab sessions and field trips, which really bring the subject to life, and supported by world leading theoretical teaching. All these combined allows the course to be highly regarded by potential employers. The recognition of The Geological Society of London is a huge endorsement towards the course, and helped to assure me of the quality of the department and the degree. The Society promotes the use of fieldwork as a very important aspect of the course, and the practical experience we are able to gain whilst completing the course will prove to be invaluable in a career in Geology."
