Parkes Institute: Our statement on Black Lives Matter, and the death of George Floyd

Published: 5 June 2020

Here follows an official statement from the Parkes Institute on recent tragic events, and the protests which have swept America and the world.

"The Parkes Institute for the Study of Jewish/non-Jewish relations expresses solidarity with George Floyd’s family, friends, community and with protests against racism. Systemic racism is a central issue that we tackle in our research and denounce in our public engagement activities, following the example set by the Anglican clergyman, Dr Rev James Parkes (1886-1981), who for reasons of human solidarity and empathy fought actively against anti-Semitism and other forms of racism before, during and after the Nazi era.

"Combating racism starts at home, and recent events rightly lead us to a moment of reflection and introspection. We commit to using our position to echo and amplify the voices and perspectives of Black colleagues and students. Following on from James Parkes we realise it is beholden on each of us to call out racism when we encounter it and intervene in the face of discrimination."
