Writing 'The Wolf in the Water' - a riposte to the Merchant of Venice

The Merchant of Venice is one of the most controversial of Shakespeare's plays; it can be played as a work of outright antisemitism, but it also contains the master's subleties and sophistications which make it more than simple anti-Jewish polemic.  The novelist and critic Naomi Alderman's play The Wolf in the Water - which follows Jessica, Shylock's daughter, 20 years after the Merchant of Venice - will be broadcast on Radio 3 on Sunday 22 May.  In this lecture, she will discuss how she came to write this riposte to the Merchant of Venice, and what she makes of Shakespeare's Jews.

Speaker Biography:

Naomi Alderman is an award-winning novelist and videogame creator.  Her novels include Disobedience and The Liars' Gospel.  She is co-creator and lead writer of the hit smartphone audio adventure Zombies, Run! Penguin will publish her new novel The Power in November.
