Event details

Part of an annual series of lectures organised by the Parkes Institute.

“St Jerome and the ‘secrets of Hebrew learning’”

During his own lifetime St Jerome was a controversial figure within the Latin Church, but the gradual acceptance of his version of the Old Testament translated from the Hebrew ensured the lasting respect of Western Christians for his scholarship. But from the point of view of Jewish-Christian relations St Jerome is a highly ambivalent figure who mined his Hebrew informants for their insights into Scripture for his own purposes while characterizing Jewish interpretations of the same Scriptures as carnal or ridiculous. The lecture explores the complexities of the religious world in the late fourth century.
