Abstract

Ethics of teaching the Holocaust and difficult histories’, July 2020

The Parkes Institute for the Study of Jewish/non-Jewish Relations is offering a free online workshop for educators titled ‘Ethics of teaching the Holocaust and difficult histories’.

The workshop, which will take place across weeks starting 6, 13 and 20th July 2020, will allow for reflection on teaching ‘difficult histories’ which are present in today’s curriculum, such as Empire, the Holocaust, and Slavery. It will also provide a platform for teachers to share and discuss their experiences and thoughts on this topic alongside input from various staff from the University.

Detailed information and schedule of events will be sent to registrants, but the outline is as follows:

Week 1: Discussion of different ‘Codes of Ethics’ on how to teach the Holocaust.

Week 2:  Teaching ‘difficult histories’: A discussion with University of Southampton staff about teaching on slavery, the Vietnam War, the Holocaust, and Empire.

Week 3: Teaching the Holocaust using online resources

The workshop will utilise a discussion board, pre-uploaded sources, and a weekly video discussion to allow participant reflection. Participants will be invited to contribute their thoughts to the discussion board and have the opportunity to discuss their experience with staff from the Parkes Institute and the History department at the University of Southampton. The resources will be available online to participants after the course.

Please register on the above link before the 3rd July.
