Interfaith week is a chance for students of all faiths (and none) to come together and build on our common ground. But why not start with some light-hearted fun and laughter? All faith-based societies are invited to come along to a chill evening of games, crafts and snacks. There will be some games and crafts around, but feel free to bring along any games or crafts you want to share. There will also be food and drinks provided (of course!) but make sure you come ready to have loads of fun and meet some new people!

Synagogue Tour with the Jewish Society

Come along to a tour of the Southampton Hebrew Congregation, our local synagogue, which has a rich history and community which goes back for over a century. Whether you’ve been to a synagogue before or have never set foot in one, you are welcome to come along and experience this side of Jewish life and culture.

Church Tour with the Catholic Society

St Edmund's Roman Catholic Church, The Avenue SO17 1XJ

Fr Vincent has very kindly opened the doors to St Edmund’s Catholic Church for visiting as part of Interfaith Week at the University of Southampton. Staff and students of all faiths or none are welcome to come along to see this wonderful Grade II listed building and explore a Catholic Church in the heart of the city.

Join Rashid Brora for a tour of the first purpose-built Mosque in the South of England. It has been featured on BBC South. Those of all faiths or none are welcome to attend and ask any questions they might have.

Parkes Institute Inter Faith Lecture: "Solidarity and Jewish-Muslim dialogue" Yulia Egorova (Durham) in conversation with Brian Klug and Aiman Alzetani, organised jointly with the Center for Transnational Studies

Drawing on her anthropological work with initiatives in Muslim-Jewish dialogue in the UK, Yulia Egorova will talk about how the participants in these initiatives conceptualise the commonalities and particularities of their communities’ experiences. In this presentation and in conversation with Brian Klug and Aiman Alzetani, she will suggest that her interlocutors from inter-faith groups productively unsettle essentialist theorizations of Jewish and Muslim identities and demonstrate a strong commitment to solidarity with each other, while also paying important analytic attention to the specificities of their Jewish and Muslim co-citizens' social histories. The conversation will be chaired by Anoushka Alexander-Rose, PhD researcher at the Parkes Institute.

Book Launch of 'Southampton's Migrant Past and Present' by Tony Kushner

This afternoon event, launching the publication of Tony Kushner's new book 'Southampton's Migrant Past and Present', will be accompanied by artistic reflections on migration. We will hear poetry from Joan McGavin, Nazneen Ahmed's poetry and film on Lascars from Mayflower400, screen the ‘Atlantic Park’ film from Tony Kushner, listen to Joseph Finlay's performance of Yiddish songs, and to testimony from the Sanneh family. The programme is organised by the Parkes Institute and supported by CLEAR, Southampton & Winchester Visitors Group, City of Sanctuary and Southampton Institute for Arts and Humanities. We will hear from the three refugee related organisations and there will be opportunities to obtain a free copy of the book and to make donations to CLEAR and the Southampton & Winchester Visitors Group.

What does 'Light' Mean to You Spiritually?

While we remain faithful to Quaker insights we really value the wisdom of others’ Faith, Philosophy and Spirituality and are willing to learn from them. With this aim we invite everyone: Faith Advisors and Students from all backgrounds - to tell us about their experience of ‘Light’ in their Faith and their lives. We will be using a structure of ‘worship sharing’ enabling people to share their experiences of their spirituality in a respectful environment. We won’t argue, defend or promote our beliefs - we just share briefly and from the heart about our personal experience- leaving a respectful silence between peoples’ contributions. We welcome contributions from these faiths/philosophies: Buddhism; Christianity; Hinduism; Humanism; Islam; Judaism; Paganism; Sikhism; Agnostic and Atheist.This is a hybrid event to enable people to attend virtually if they are unable to attend physically. Tea, coffee & biscuits (vegan) will be available afterwards.
