Event details

The Dead Sea Scrolls and the Contours and Texture of Palestinian Judaism.

About the event

The Dead Sea Scrolls were initially associated with an ancient Jewish sect who positioned themselves on the fringes of Jewish life in Second Temple times. Recent research on the one thousand or so ancient manuscripts – including tens of thousands of fragments – suggests instead that this cache of texts is transforming our knowledge of Palestinian Judaism as a whole in this period which gave rise to Early Judaism and emerging Christianity. This lecture will illustrate the areas where evidence from the Dead Sea Scrolls reveals scribes who made a substantial contribution to the foundations of the Jewish and Christian traditions that have shaped the world we live in today.
