Join Tony Kushner and the Parkes Institute on this walking tour linked to the book and walking tour guide: Southampton’s Migrant Past.
Join Tony Kushner for this free walking tour of Southampton, organised by October Books and the Parkes Institute, where you'll learn all about the City's vibrant migrant history. The walk will cover many different migrant histories from the medieval through to post-Second World War. Well known buildings will be reinterpreted through the lens of migration and many hidden sites will be uncovered. Taken together they will show that Southampton is a city built on migration and that its prosperity and culture have depended and been shaped by newcomers and their descendants.
Tony Kushner teaches and researches in the Parkes Institute and the History Department of the University of Southampton. He has written widely on migration, racism, heritage and belonging.
This free tour begins at 2pm from the Duke of Wellington Pub, 36 Bugle Street, Southampton, SO14 2AH. The tour lasts approximately 2 hours, ending at the Grapes at 4pm. There will be an optional buffet reception following the tour at God’s House Tower from 4:30pm.
