Event details

Writers in Conversation features some of today’s best fiction writers, poets, non-fiction writers and playwrights reading from their work and talking about their writing lifestyle - how characters take shape and where ideas come from. Led by creative writing lecturers at the University of Southampton, the event takes place in Nuffield Kitchen, helping to create an evening that is relaxed, engaging and intelligent, yet informal.

A Boy in Winter

‘Unsettling and powerful, a magnificent novel' - Linda Grant
‘A writer of great delicacy and toughness’ – Ali Smith

Booker-shortlisted novelist Rachel Sieffert, named one of the Granta Best of Young British Novelists, will read and discuss her new novel, A Boy in Winter, as part of the Writers in Conversation series.

Early on a grey November morning in 1941, only weeks after the German invasion, a small Ukrainian town is overrun by the SS. Deft, spare and devastating, Rachel Seiffert's new novel tells of the three days that follow and the lives that are overturned in the process.

One of those in a determined boy Yankel – the “boy in winter” -- who will throw his and his young brother's chances of surviving to strangers.

Seiffert, the author of three other novels including The Dark Room, and a story collection, Field Study, which received as award from PEN International,  will take questions from the audience about using history in fiction and other topics.

This event is run in partnership with the Parkes Institute, an internationally renowned community of scholars, archivists, librarians, students, and activists based at the University of Southampton. The Institute is the world's oldest and most wide-ranging centre for the study of Jewish/non-Jewish relations across the ages.
