At a time when higher education funding is decreasing nationally, the Parkes Institute is fortunate to be able to offer a number of both unique and annual competitive studentships.
We are thrilled to announce the recipients of the 21/22 James Parkes Postgraduate Scholarship and Agron PhD Scholarship.
The James Parkes Postgraduate Scholarship is awarded to Asher Chee for his PhD project, 'Jewish–Christian Exegetical Encounters over the Book of Isaiah in Late Antiquity'. The scholarship will facilitate Asher's use of the Parkes Library, which contains editions of Jewish and Christian primary sources which are pivotal to his work.
The Agron PhD Scholarship is awarded to Anoushka Alexander-Rose for her research project, 'Vladimir Nabokov and the Jewish Question'. Anoushka will use the Agron scholarship to support her in the second year of her PhD, where she is undertaking research into how Vladimir Nabokov writes about the Jewish theme in his early work. The grant will also contribute to her archival research, planned for May and June this year, at the New York Public Library and Library of Congress in Washington D.C., where she has access to the unpublished restricted materials including Nabokov’s personal correspondence, to find crucial context for his writings.
The Parkes Institute has received a generous donation to fund a £5000 scholarship in honour of the work of Dr Reverend James Parkes. The pioneering work of the Reverend Dr James Parkes is ever more relevant to a world in increasing crisis and division but remains sadly neglected in academia and beyond. Through this important scheme, it is hoped that a new generation of academically young scholars will be encouraged to take further the work of James Parkes.
It will be awarded to one, or split between two, PhD student(s).
In order to apply to this fund you must be a Postgraduate Research student already studying within the Faculty of Arts and Humanities. You can be registered full time or part time. You must have at least a year of candidature left before submission of thesis for viva.
Priority will be given to students currently working on, by order of preference:
i. The Church and the Holocaust or Christian-Jewish Relations in the history of antisemitism
ii. Christian-Jewish relations throughout the ages
iii. Jewish/non-Jewish relations throughout the ages.
Applicants who will use the Parkes Library and related archives and those who intend a later career in the fields of James Parkes’ interest will be particularly welcomed.
The quality of the applicant and the relevance of their research project will be the major consideration when assessing applications. A continuing desire to work in the field beyond graduation will be taken into consideration.
Financial need will also be considered but will not be a major determining factor in decision-making.
Awards will be either £2500 or £5000.
The deadline for applications has now passed. Please check back soon for details of 22/23 funding opportunities.
