Laurie Stras wins 2014 Engage Competition Award for Individual-led Project
Congratulations go to Music Professor Laurie Stras, whose Celestial Sirens project was voted winner of the Individual-led Project category at the national NCCPE Engage Awards. Laurie received her Award from Professor Alice Roberts in a ceremony held at the Natural History Museum as part of Universities Week.
Laurie's Celestial Sirens project has animated her research into 16th Century music that has not been heard for centuries. The Celestial Sirens amateur choir provides a living lab in which to experiment with repertoire, and, through performances and recordings, brings the fruits of Laurie's research to a wider public.
Alongside Laurie's success, the University was very well represented within the Engage Competition as a whole (judges were selecting from 230 entries nationally) with runners-up also chosen in the Engaging Young People category: Erica the Rhino; and in the STEM category: Marine Engineering Connections.
