Public Engagement with Research

Getting started

Interacting with the public can be exciting but also unpredictable. You may be engaging with a wide range of individuals and groups, from very young children to highly informed adults, and you may not always know what to expect.

If you are new to public engagement, there is training available to help you get prepared.

The best way to get started is to volunteer to get involved with an established event or activity - see Southampton's Spectrum of Public Engagement for some easy routes to 'give it a go'.  You can also meet other colleagues who are already involved by joining the Public Engagement Network.

You know your own research better than anyone else, so who better to promote it and tell everyone just why it excites you. If you have a good idea for engaging the public but don't know how to get it off the ground, we may be able to help you, so contact us.
