How to get involved

The call to participate in Human Worlds Festival as a 2020 contributor is now open.

The Festival will run from Thursday 12 to Sunday 22 November and you will be able to contribute three different type of activities:

Human Worlds Digital will run through the whole length of the festival. All digital content will be hosted on the official website: The website will be configured to offer the same options as

Hands on Humanities Day Goes Digital! Update: our family-friendly event, which was initially scheduled to take place on at the Avenue Campus, will now be taking place on-line on Saturday 21st November, from 10:30 to 16:30.

This year you will be also able to contribute digital content to Black History Month as we are welcoming relevant virtual events and activities to be featured on the Human Worlds website in October in the runner up towards the festival.

As in past years, we are delighted to host digital events in October and November also for the upcoming US Presidential Elections

Outline of the registration process

Submissions for all activities are password protected, with a single stage process for Human Worlds Digital and a 3 stage process for Hands-on Humanities Day or other in-person events.

For researchers

If you are a researcher at the University of Southampton looking to showcase your project at Human Worlds Festival, please note that the internal call at the University of Southampton for contributors usually opens at the end of the summer.

An 'Exhibitor Registration' call will be posted on SUSSED and sent to the Public Engagement (PE) Network mailing list. These internal communications will contain the log in details to submit your activity.

The call will also be announced on the PERu social media profiles, please just follow #HumanWorlds.

If you wish to join the PE Network mailing list, please e-mail and include you Department and field of research if applicable.

For students

Students and student societies are more than welcome to submit relevant content to be included in the Festival programme.

Please note: due to the current edition of Human Worlds Festival being entirely digital, there will be no opportunities in 2020 to be involved as a student ambassador.

In a normal year, students at the University of Southampton looking to volunteer alongside researchers or staff, or to be paid to work as a Student Ambassador would be asked to get in touch by sending an e-mail to from the end of September or to check with their local Student Ambassador scheme.

For external exhibitors

This call is open to national and international collaborators of researchers at the University of Southampton, freelance artists, cultural venues, schools, trusts and community groups.

If you are an external exhibitor hoping to engage with public at Human Worlds Festival, please e-mail us at to further discuss your ideas.
