All of the learning on our courses is research led, particularly in second year when lecturers tend to be teaching the subject of their research.

What made you choose to come to study at Southampton?

Southampton was one of only a very few Russell Group Universities which offered this degree option. The options in the modules were very alluring too, specifically in Philosophy and the freedom to choose module from other specialities. I really enjoyed the environment at the open day too.

What have been your Southampton ‘highlights’?

Apart from the whole experience of being a Fresher, which is mainly due to Southampton having an excellent nightlife, I’d have to say being a part of the entrepreneurial society, Fish on Toast.

Fish on Toast has been very inspiring, leading me to start two ventures. I am part of a team who have launched a national student magazine called The Worldly; when we launched our leading article was an interview with Sir Richard Branson. My other venture is a technology start-up, which is involved in the University’s business mentorship programme.

I’ve also had great opportunities for internships with PageGroup and insight days with PwC. I’m currently part of a student consultancy team working with a non-for-profit organisation.

Have you had any exposure to employer involvement or research led learning during your course?

All of the learning on our courses is research led, particularly in second year when lecturers tend to be teaching the subject of their research. Whatever your career ambition, there is always exposure to employers in that industry. There are also 4 societies dedicated to enterprise and entrepreneurship.

What did you enjoy most about your course?

The freedom to choose the modules which I wanted to study, meaning that I rarely needed to study or read anything that I don’t enjoy.

As a dual honours student, my studies straddle two academic disciplines, and I have further opportunities to study many other areas, including a module in social enterprise.

What networking, employment and work experience opportunities did you undertake and how did they enhance your undergraduate experience?

There are many opportunities for employment related experiences at Southampton. Personally, I’ve been on an insight week with PwC, and completed a term-time internship with PageGroup. I also had multiple networking experiences with professionals and business people from all disciplines.
