Dr Nils-Hennes Stear

Dr Nils-Hennes Stear's photo

Nils completed his MA at the University of Sheffield and his PhD at the University of Michigan, after which he spent a year as a research fellow at the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM) in Mexico City. At Southampton, he is carrying out the European Commission funded project 'Art & Ethics'.

Research interests

Nils works in aesthetics, ethics and their intersection. He's interested in understanding how ethical values in artworks affect their aesthetic values, what makes an artwork a legitimate target of ethical criticism, and various other normative questions around art appreciation understood broadly. Some of this work relates to other areas, such as feminist philosophy, the philosophy of race, and metaphysics.
