Published: 20 May 2014

Ray Monk, Professor of Philosophy at Southampton, has been nominated for the prestigious Plutarch Award for his critically acclaimed biography of Robert Oppenheimer, ‘Inside the Centre’.

The Plutarch Award is given by the US-based Biographers' International Organisation. Joining Ray on this year's shortlist are biographers of figures as diverse as Simón Bolivar, Jim Henson, Marianne Moore, Jonathan Swift and Lawrence of Arabia.

‘Inside the Centre' has already been described as "magisterial and moving" by John Gray in the Literary Review, been named book of the year in the New Statesman, and been hailed in national newspapers such as The Guardian and The Times, and in the London Review of Books.
