Royal Institute of Philosophy continues funding for Outreach

Published: 17 July 2014

Philosophy at Southampton is delighted to announce that it will expand its ambitious programme of Sixth Form Philosophy events in 2014-15, with the generous support of the Royal Institute of Philosophy.

In 2013-14 we hosted four major Philosophy conferences, attended by hundreds of Sixth Form students from 26 schools in Hampshire and beyond.

Thanks to a £2,500 grant from the Royal Institute of Philosophy, we will be able to continue with a similar programme in 2014-15, giving even more students a taste of this fascinating subject and of university learning.

Our conferences aim not only to stimulate and challenge students already studying Philosophy, but also to introduce interested students to Philosophy for the first time.

They include lectures on a variety of accessible philosophical topics delivered in an engaging way by University of Southampton philosophers, with plenty of time for Q & A. There are also smaller break-out sessions, in which students participate in seminar-style discussion led by Philosophy undergraduates.

Representative comments from feedback on previous conferences include:

"A really superb day - the students have really responded very well to it." - Teacher

"Really enjoyable day ... Great insight for students into the university experience." - Teacher

"I think that it was extremely interesting and helped me understand what philosophy would be like as a university subject. ... I really enjoyed the day and think it was extremely beneficial." - Student

"Loved every part, and very educational." - Student
