Philosophy at Southampton rank 8th in the Guardian League Table

Published: 11 June 2015

We were pleased to announce that Philosophy at Southampton is ranked 8th in the Guardian league table, climbing ten spots since last year and twenty-four since the year before last

The Guardian University Guide has put our Philosophy programme in the top ten of the league table for all Philosophy degrees in the country. The Philosophy programme's scores in student satisfaction have long been stellar, and this year the score for student satisfaction with teaching is at its highest in recent years. The programme's dramatic climb over the past two years is partly explained by a great improvement in student to staff ratio, due no doubt to the department's numerous recent appointments. The appointments also likely explain the even higher teaching satisfaction number, since they have broadened and deepened the department's already wide-ranging expertise. The department has long been a leader in aesthetics and the history of philosophy, and in recent years has established itself as a world-class centre for the study of normativity. Recent hires in epistemology, metaphysics, and philosophy of science and medicine have furthered the department's wide coverage of the discipline.
