Event details

The conference will explore general issues in the theory of normativity.

This conference is the second in an annual series alternating between the University of Southampton and Humboldt University, Berlin. It aims to bring together philosophers working on normativity, including foundational problems of moral philosophy and practical normativity more generally, reasons and rationality, and epistemic and other forms of normativity. Our primary aim is to provide a forum for lively and constructive exchange amongst philosophers currently working in the field.

The keynote speakers are Professor Nomy Arpaly (Brown University) and Professor Sandford Goldberg (Northwestern University).

In addition, the conference will include a number of open sessions for submitted papers (selected by blind review):

  • Daniele Bruno (Humboldt) - “Subjective Accounts of Moral Obligation and the Problem of Culpable Ignorance”
  • Lindsay Crawford (Connecticut) - “Believing the Best: On Doxastic Partiality in Friendship”
  • Chris Howard (Arizona) - “Fitting Love and Reasons for Loving”
  • Kathryn Lindeman (Saint Louis) - “Norms from History: the Future of Constitutivism?”
  • Jörg Löschke (Bern) - “Agent-Relative Reasons as Second-Order Value Responses”
  • Susanne Mantel (Saarland) - “Because There Is a Reason to Do It: How Normative Reasons Explain Action”
  • Neil Mehta (Yale-NUS) - “Humeanism and the Categorical Character of Epistemic Normativity”
  • Justin Snedegar (St Andrews) - “Overlapping Reasons”

This conference is organised in accordance with the BPA/SWIP good practice scheme and is generously supported by the Mind Association, the Aristotelian Society, the Analysis Trust, and the Southampton Ethics Centre.
